absolut: standard Midi controllers (that is not motorized or endless) relative: for motorized faders or endless encoders At least that's how I know from other soft, I have a BCR2000 with endless encoders (works in relative mode), but didn't try in Reaper yet. No clue about the three different relative modes (maybe that's something to read up in the Midi controller manual, which is supported, don't have the BCR manual at hand atm).

Absolute takes the value byte of a controller event and uses the value directly as new value for the learned parameter. So you might get value jumps if you don't have a motorized fader or such.. Relative mode de/increments the parameter value from where it is with every event it receives. This only makes sense for endless rotary encoders that don't have an upper and lower border for their movement, so you can rotate them endlessly in both directions. You can set these rotaries up so that they will send one and the same controller value with each left turn and another one with each right turn. Meaning eg each left turn movement may send cc16/value 127, while turning right may send cc16/value 0. The three different relative modes are defining which value (in hexa) you must send to them. The first will listen to cc value 0 ($01)to increment and 127 ($7F) to decrement and thus react just fine to my example rotary above if you learn it to cc16.
