Dear members, As I am a newbie please forgive me if anything in this message sound unprofessional. I am trying to backup a DVD with Gknot. After successfully decrypting it to my HD I convert it to AVI with Xvid (2 passes), which took around 24 hours. I use Motion Search Precision: 6 - Ultra High and VHQ 4. I suspect it is the VHQ 4, but is the quality still acceptable if I use less? Say I use VHQ 1 or 2, how long would it take with a 2 pass, and how would be the quality? I have a pentium 4, 1.7 Ghz, 512 MB RAM. Thanks for your help, catwoman

If time is an issue then go ahead and use VHQ1, the quality is still very good. Also what program are you using to create your Xvid?

Using VHQ4 will definitely increase encoding time. If you are using VHQ4 for whole two passes, then condition is more worse. So as forum experts say use VHQ1 for pass1 and greater (even VHQ4) for pass2. Quality will not be degraded. -Tuning-

Hi Tuning- Using VHQ4 will defenitely increase encoding speed. Maybe a typo there? I think you mean either "increase encoding time", or "decrease encoding speed". Or maybe even "Using VHQ1 will definitely increase encoding speed". I'm with Hiro2k on this. VHQ4 is too slow, and I almost always use VHQ1 for both passes. I'm guessing that using VHQ1 for both passes will decrease your encoding time to somewhere around 16 hours. Just a guess. That still sounds a bit high to me for your machine, though. Maybe you're doing some heavy filtering in your .avs script. I don't know. And as Tuning said; VHQ1 for the first pass and VHQ4 for the second pass works fine also.

What machine are you using? I am using a P4 3.2 and I encode ripped dvd to xvid in real time. May be you can try using the 1-pass quality mode. Set it to 90, 92 or even 95. The quality is still very good. And it save the 1 pass time.

He listed his machine specs in the first post. Doing a 1pass quality based encode won't get your desired filesize if your trying to fit the movie on 2 cds or 1 cd. But if filesize is not a problem, then doing a 1 pass encode is the best decicision you can make. VHQ will slow down your encode time to a crawl, no matter what machine you have*. So it's not fair to compare the speeds since you are not using VHQ4. *Not sure how fast the Athlon64 is yet

Dear members, thanks a lot for your replies. I will try a VHQ1 in first pass and VHQ4 2nd pass, and also VHQ1 in both passes. > Maybe you're doing some heavy filtering in your .avs script. I > don't know. No, I don't do any filtering. Will be back with some results. Thanks again, catwoman

I forgot to mention which software I use: I used Flask MPEG the first time, and then DVD2AVI (through Gknot) the second time. I don't know if the program is important in terms of speed, but it took both times around 24 hours with the settings I mentioned before. catwoman
