Hello all, I've been a hardcore VCD/SVCD fan for a long time but when I recently saw a friends Divx rip, I decided to start experimenting. Now I read all of the guides, printed them out and used them successfully...except....burning. Now NO guide I have found talks about burning. I have found enough posts to realize the whole mode 2 800 mb on a 80 minute CD trick doesn't work with .avi....but I am experiencing an odd issue. My file is 705 mb as reported by nero....possibly overburnable right? But when I open it in Nero it is reported as 740 mb? What is the deal with that? I am right that I just burn the .avi onto the disc right? should I just be shooting for smaller file sizes? it seems like it would be a good idea to get as close to 700 mb as possible. Help....I am really having fun playing with divx 5.02 (and boy is my girlfriend impressed) bu this is frustrating the hell out of me. macros

When you burn a normal data CD, the CD has 3 error correction tracks, IIRC. When you burn an SVCD, it only has 2 error correction tracks (I am not too sure about the exact numbers, but SVCD definately has fewer). This is just fine because MPEG-2 has built-in error correction, so you save the space that would normally be used for that track, and you can use it for video. When overburning, I would think that Nero shows exactly how many bytes it will write including error correction data. I am really not too sure about this, so instead you should look at the time it says right next to the size in Mb. It should be somewhere above 80:00:00 if you are overburning (well... d'oh). That's really the only reasonable way to measure how much space that you use on a given Data-CD/XCD/VCD/SVCD.

So, interestingly enough, it says 740 mb on both sides of the 'files' section of nero. But on the bar beneath with the red and yellow lines it only lists it as 707 mb. I have enabled overburn....but it doesn't seem to work....hmmmm....help? Any suggestions? Macros p.s. I suppose if worse comes to worst I'll cut off the credits.

Alright, So I successfully burned it by hacking off the end credits.....I guess it is a worth sacrifice. I guess I;ll shoot for a smaller file size next time. Thanks for the help guys. I still have a lot to learn. Macros

Even after enabling overburning in Nero's preferences, you must also set Nero to burn in Disk-At-Once (DAO) mode. If you use the Wizard to create a data disc, it will be in Track-At-Once (TAO) mode because it assumes a multisession disc. Here's what to do: 1. Close the Wizard. 2. Select File...Compilation Info 2. On the Multisession tab, change to No Multisession 3. On the Burn tab, change to Disk-At-Once Prior to doing this, you should have already used the Nero CD Speed tool to test overburning on a blank disc. It will show you the maximum capacity of that brand disc in your drive in minutes:seconds:frames. Use that value as the maximum for Overburn in Nero's preferences window. Good luck!

Oh, my version of Nero (5.5.9.0) shows file sizes in windows, when viewing in Detail mode, in bytes. The bar across the bottom for data mode CD shows consumption in Megabytes (MB). 1MB = 1,048,576 bytes, 700MB = 734,003,200 bytes.
