It's come to my attention that using a plug-in compressor while tracking doesn't really benifit much. I've only recently been with out an external compressor for tracking and now i'm realizing that i may need to purchase one. If i'm wanting to use a plug-in compressor while tracking vocals will I still get distortion going through the converters? Is the only way to effectily use compression while tracking to use an external compressor? and if so can I get some recommendations. It'd have to be a nice "cost effect" unit. Don't have much to spend but I need something to use for tracking. Thanks!

Yes, plugins come AFTER the converters, so a compressor there can't do anything to prevent 'overs'. You don't mention which Digi product you're using, but the only one that has inserts is the Mbox. For that, the FMR RNC is the compressor to beat, for about $175. On the 001, 002 and 002R, using compression during tracking requires a compressor AND an external mic preamp. Lack of inserts on the 002 models is an unfortunate oversight.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a 002R and an Mbox for a seperate editing station. Any recomendations on a preamp. I know that there are several different preamps out there ranging in price...but again, a preamp that'll give me the best bang for my buck? thanks.

Well, the high end preamps cost hundreds or thousands per channel. At the lower end, I've found the StudioProjects VTB-1 ($130) to be quite useful, but I haven't used mine in a while - I've got a 7th Circle box () loaded with 3 different types of fairly high-end modules. The VTB-1 conveniently has an unbalanced 1/4" TRS insert jack, which makes it perfect for use with the FMR RNC.

I have to sound off here. I have preamps by manley, neve api, telefunken. I just did a project where I helped the artist set up an mbox for some over dubs. the mbox pre's are fine. Everything he did was great on the record. My advice is to buy the RNC and track thru the mbox. One thing we did on his project was to run some of the tracks thru some of my 1176s and La-3s after he was done. Although I have never used a rnc, I have heard really good things. Plugin comps (I use the McDSP ones alot) are good for leveling, but usually lack the great character of the hardware ones. There is enough headroom with 24 bit that you should not have to use a hardware comp. Turn down your input and record. I am new to ptle, but have an mbox that I am setting up now. I used it for a trip to africa in 2002 to record some local music. I never tracked anything with it other than that. I have a tdm rig I do most of my stuff with. Your mileage may vary....rich

Toolowd - I agree with you. The Mbox preamps sound fine. They don't have a lot of gain, but otherwise, sound good. And a compressor isn't essential, if you set the levels correctly.
