Hello, sorry if you get these kinds of threads all the time. I'm brand new to both gearslutz and really the music production/recording scene in general. I'm a vocalist who sings all type of music, but I have no clue what to do with my voice when it comes to recording. I currently am recording with a Audiotechnica AT2020 run through a M-Audio MBOX II into my ASUS laptop (using the latest version reaper). I feel like whenever I record, there is no fullness of sound our anything and it's starting to make me feel like maybe I just suck and the mic is telling me. The sound is very dead to me. I wanted to ask you guys what you think I should do to achieve a strong and full vocal sound in my recording. Is it my performance or is it something that I can achieve through proper audio editing? I've included a quick recording that I just made of The Weeknd's "Crew Love" (Only the first verse and chorus). I added no plug-ins to it, that way you guys can look at the actual performance and see what can be done to it. I'd really appreciate any help. I've been doing a lot of reading and googling so I understand what a lot of the different terms and stuff means, but it's been really confusing going from reading about a theory in a book to actually attempting to apply it to the recording. If I could start by getting a little guidance, I feel like I could go from there and experiment. Thanks you guys.

I had a listen... my initial thought is that you're recording the vocal in space that's not treated, you can hear a bit of the room reverb on the vocal track and that can make it sound "thin"(in my experience). Where did you record the track?

I suggest drinking a nice bottle of wine then covering yourself and the microphone with a thick blanket and trying that. I find I always get my best bedroom vocal performances this way. You can always try and turn your closet into a vocal booth - search around on the internet.
