440 S 1.9 TDi Smoking

Hi My 440 diesel has started to smoke a lot after starting from cold. It tends to idle rough for short while also ( 10 seconds). If i increase the revs slightly the smoking stops and it is perfect all day and it does not smoke again till i cold start the following morning. Bye for now. Kind regards Andy

After reading through my first post i've noticed that i've made a few spelling mistakes : "was" in the third paragraph is supposed to be WAY. and "fick" in the same paragraph is supposed to be FLICK. I just wanted to correct these mistakes because there's nothing worse than reading something thats full of spelling mistakes. Sean.

Smoking 

Hi there, Dunno if this is relevant, but just a thought that sprung to mind. I don't know if it's relevant to Volvos, but being the enviro - wagen that they are, maybe. The Mercedes 220 Diesel suffers identical symptoms, due to a thingy called a 'recirculation valve' not working. Basically it sends the exhaust fumes back through for a second burn, and if it doesn't work you get thick black smoke out of the exhaust. Perhaps a Tecchie on the site can advise if your car has a similar setup? Regards, Anthony.
