Hi, Most likely electrical, but what? as I have not heard of anything like this before.. I would suggest a check of all your fuses and also unplug and plug back in all your relays. There are 3 locations for the fuses and relays: Big black box in the engine compartment. Small black box also in engine compartment, opposite side under the expansion tank. Passenger side edge (or drivers side) of the dash. It may also help to clean the "PNP for the gears by changing from P through to L and back about 30 times - engine off. I would also suggest getting to either a dealer or good independant and get your codes read, as there will likely be a fault recorded... Des. . . ;)

It may be the ignition switch. It has been noted by a few people in this forum that sometimes a contact in the switch does not make correctly and when you have started the car a number of electrical items will not work. I first found this when the indicators failed to work, also the lights don't come on and a few other things such as the sun roof. All it takes is a slight jiggle of the switch and the contact is made and all is back to normal. If it gets really bad then i'm told its an easy job to change the switch on the end of the igntion switch assembly. I must say I have not had trouble with the gear selector, so perhaps your problem is a bit different, but I suspect that the solenoid the Peter refers to is fed via the same circuit as all the other items and thats why you see this problem first. My car does exactly the same. Every time I start the car, I have to turn the key back a touch - almost as if the return-from-start-position spring isn't pulling all the way back.
