I'm interested in experimenting with non-Western scales, specifically equal intonation scales (like Harry Partch), and non-octave scales. Is there a VST plugin that will take a midi signal from a normal midi keyboard and assign it a sound (or output frequency) based on an alternative scale? Ideally one could assign a particular fundamental frequency to each midi note to "custom build" new scales. Hope this makes some sense... - JM

perhaps JS:IX/Midi_Variant will do the job or maybe could be a basis for that purpose?

Indeed, this is a feature of the general midi 2 standard. It's been a long time since I used it, so I can't give you details here (though I might look into it again, as it's very interesting). In short, in GM2 devices that support this you can sent sysex data to finetune the pitch of individual notes. I know there were midi files containing the needed data for several tunings floating the net which you would just place at the start of your song. Aah, and I know one vsti supporting several tunings: Pianotec allows you to chose from some tuning methods.

Big Tick's Rhino supports alternate tuning (TUN) files, and the Korg Legacy collection allows alternate tunings, although it is limited to 12-tone scales.
