.....boy do I piss myself off when I do this....(this being the 5 millionth time). I use a pair of Senheiser 380HD's....and...for some reason....there pretty freakin' loud for headphones. (Which isn't good)....but....I went to turn the volume up an RCH (red hair) and managed to bump it up to fullblast...FUUUUCK!!!! It appears to be working at about 80% today....the ear that is. I must have gotten the right side of the phones off my ear quicker because that side is normal. I sometimes...have reaper set up to mute the signal if the volume climbs to high.....but, sometimes I listen with out headphones....and soo, I have to turn it all the way up to hear what ever it is I'm listening for. So, I didn't have the mute effect turned on. I guess I'm going to have to go with the limiter on the master track like a few guys recommended the last time I did this dumb ass thing. sigh
Eeesh, sorry to hear this. Do whatever you need to do to make sure this never happens again, even if it involves buying a monitor/headphone controller.
ya know how it happens.....I put the curner on the volume....raise it where I want it. Then move the curser clear to the other side....but....for some reason or other....the fucking thing is still "linked, hooked, attached" to the volume control even though it's on the other side of the screen....then....the second I move it again.....WHAAAAAAAM....FULL BLAST.
You can choose in Reaper's Settings how much dB over the peak in Master there should be bfore Reaper to mute the Master channel. I use +6 dB and it works fine.
Oh, no! Be sure to rest your ear up. I hope you are back to 100% soon. Thanks for posting this, it helps people to know how to prevent it. I hope people realize that sometimes loud noises can really be a problem.
I wish we had the ability to specify amount of time (in ms) of how long the signal must top the threshold for it to be muted, this way we can let through occasional transients, but mute a constant loud signal.
okay....check this out.....ya know how I said these headphones are loud....(and what's up with that.....I don't even understand how that could be but...) you say +6 db.....and I realize I can set this at anything...but...I have 9 tracks or so....all of the tracks are set pretty much in the middle which is around -30 if I read that right......I like to listen pretty loud actually...sigh...I know...but......-24. db...is freakin' blasting.......minus twenty four.....+6. is called permanent brain damage with these headphones. Oh yeah....I love these headphones.....I just wish they were a bit quieter.
Might be worth checking your hearing for damage, I regularly check mine to know where NOT to over compensate. Also I look after my ears e.g earwax removal/build up.
