Understanding matrices

hi folks, i am making DivX/XviD movies for a long time now, but now i feel ready for the more advanced methods. I want to expiriment with matrices, but i don't really understand them. - what is a matrix? - what does it do? - how to build a matrix? i searched the internet, but i couldn't find any understandable documents. consider me as a newbie on this front. do you guys know any tutorials on this? tnx!

I would highly recommend buying and reading a book called Video Compression Demystified: It contains a much clearer explanation of what quantizer matrices are, and how they work, than any I've read on the forum. Enjoy.
