Sennheiser HD600's are very good, I use them personally and I find them to be pretty true and comfortable to use for extended periods. This is due in part to there open backed construction. They are also the choice of many respected engineers I know in the UK.

I was using the AKG 240's and, like the poster, found that it was tough to get a realistic perspective on the low end. I've found an unlikely complement to the AKG's...the Koss Porta-Pro's. They seem to really reveal problems that might have slipped-passed by using the AKG's alone. I'm really impressed by this compact headset and at $50 they won't break the bank. (They function pretty well as portable stereo phones, too!)

Hi, I agree with Ozzie... Sennheiser HD600 are the best... for mixing. I've also tried other similar Sennheiser models (like the HD590) and they are not as good... They're not cheap but really worth it... (But I do hate the stupid and fragile little cable connectors that comes with them... ) Take care

I've found the AKG K270S headphones to be the best for both checking mixes and artist recording (actually having the artist wear them while recording, etc.). Although, I will say that mixing in headphones is not a good idea. Checking a mix just to see where things are here and there is alright but it's no substitute for a great pair of monitors and a well tuned room.

I find Beyer DT931 to be very accurate and not hyped. Open ear headphones, so not good for recording but I use them to check mixes constantly. Expensive -$200-300 but well worth it and the only ones I've found under $300 that are not hyped.
