OK, I read that AVI2SVCD is supposed to be able to accept type 2 .avi files. Well, I just captured an hour off of my hi-8 camera using Scenelyzer (mainconcept codec) and type 2 format--I just captured it with the Panasonic DV codec and it does the same thing. I captured about a minute and it was fine, but the 12.7 gig file won't open (TMPG doesn't like it either). It opens up in Virtual Dub, but when I pull it into AVI2SVCD all the options are greyed out. It shows no time length and I cannot convert the file. Can anyone give me any hints as I've read that others are doing this and I think I'm doing this right. Back to searching. thanks!
is your file variable bit rate mp3? if so that's the problem.. capture the wav with virtual dub using full processing mode then remux it using virtual dub or some other program
it's weird, most files work, but that one didn't. However, I can't capture with virtual dub and my IEEE card. It doesn't recognize it and it freezes when I try to use it. I use Scenelyzer for my long captures and Premiere for short ones.
He means, open the vile in virtualdub and: Audio>Full processing mode Audio>Compression>No compression (PCM) File>Save WAV... After VirtualDub saves the wav file, close and reopen virtualdub. (Easiest way to reset the settings.) Then load the avi again and: Video>Direct stream copy Audio>WAV audio...>Choose the wav you just ripped. File>Save as AVI... (Or F7)

duh! I just re-read what he wrote and now feel like a fool. Yeah, I have done that in the past, but since I'm capturing straight from my hi-8 via firewire, I don't believe that the audio is being re-sampled. Man, now I know how my students feel when I tell them they need to make sure they understand what they read!:)
Have you tried capturing using a different video codec? DivX5.0.2 is nice... You can even set the bitrate to about 2000+ to make sure you don't lose any quality... Since you are going to encode again. So far I've not had any trouble converting avi to (S)VCD, even with VBR MP3. As a matter of fact, I just did one last night. Since it exctracts the mp3 and converts it to wav and then to mp2, there's not audio problems or even sync issues as I've had with avi's with vbr mp3. (God, I hate vbr mp3.)
I'm not sure I can capture with the Divx codec. I'm using a DV codec (which I thought I had to use for IEEE (firewire) to capture. But believe me, I'm no pro at this.
hey...open your file with virtual dub... if you see a message saying something about audio having to be skewed by more than 0ms then your file is vbr mp3...that will be a problem with a2s.
