you may be interested to know that on a Mac Pro (quad 2.66ghz Xeon) with 3 gb ram (apple aproved ram) and 3 fast internal hard drives (apps, audio and samples respectively) I experience the same fluctuations in performance at 'idling' as you do. 20-40%, and certain spoftsynths can really make it spike. I also experience a cpu "over" whenever pro tools opens or a new session is loaded. I am not alone in this experience on the mac side. other issues: error messages (connection failure to 002 interface, too many interrupt (when working with NI Akoustik piano and guitar rig 2) and error messages suggesting I need to change buffer size because I am hitting the cpu too hard. All of this is while operating relatively simple sessions that wouldn't make an earlier generation Power Mac break a sweat. a fgew tracks, a couple of softsynths. Don't be too quick to blame your memory or other configuration. The roads point to Pro tools 7.3 the way I see it. something is wacky here. JP
Good point... it is interesting to know that the same problems are occuring on a Mac. Clearly, Pro-Tools has become increasingly sensitive to the hardware on which it is run. I run Protools 7.1 on an older single processor computer without problem. Reading some of the comments on this forum, I'm forming the impression that pro-tools is quite problematic in version 7.3. I have some of the memory errors that others are complaining about as well...Maybe it is time to switch to another DAW?

Does anyone know if the jumpy processor problem has been solved with pro-tools version 7.4 ? Also, I did notice that on my laptop from SONICA this problem does not exist (I would say that I'm very happy with the product from SONICA, however, I occassionally get a blue screen !)
