Short has a max ADC (total delay) of 1023 samples per channel.. and Long has a max total delay of 4095 samples per channel at 44.1 kHz (values will differ at different sample rates). What's not to understand? Rail

Yup. So. If you have it set to 1000 samples, and you have a condition that sets a channel over that amount of delay, PT will compensate for the 1000 samples you told it to, and tell you (in the readout at the bottom of the channel when you choose to see it) what the remaining delay is. If you choose the 4000 sample engine, you have 4000 samples of compensation available to you. Obviously, the larger setting takes more DSP.... Hope that helps, S..
