Hi, Can anyone tell me how to select a midi instrument in Reaper? I'm not talking about the plug-ins in the Instruments section of FX. But the 127 General Midi presets. I want to record a midi track using Nylon Guitar as the instrument but cannot find how to set this parameter. Any help would be great. Thanks

First you need to enable MIDI output for the SW synth. Next on the track's i/o send MIDI data to the SW synth. Next right-click on the track and Show MIDI Controls, or click on the fx button and add ReaConrtolMIDI. In the program/bank section load a GM.reabank That's about it. Sent some notes to your soundcard. Next, and this is the important bit, utterly abandon this idea, the sounds are truly dreadful! Look for technogremlin's "Going all freeware" thread. Here are some workstation type VSTi's Yellow Tools Independence Free Wusikstation UVIWorkstation Proteus VX Kore Player sfz+ shortcircuit Search for sf2 files on the web, there are some quite decent free ones For a simple acoustic sound I recommend Spicy Guitar while it's still free Steve

Thanks for the responses Bradleyfilms & Gofer. Based on what you said I managed to get the the correct patch set but have now run into another issue: I cannot hear any of the midi sound in either record or playback (I wanted to confirm that the sound recorded was in fact a nylon guitar). Here is the setup: Input set to : Record Input Midi Input: Virtual Midi Keyboard / All Channels Monitor Input: Ticked Routing Matrix: Looks fine, Nylon Guitar routes to Left Output + Right Mute: Not selected (and nothing else is on solo - this is the only track) Mixer: All looks good, the red line in the Nylon Guitar channel bounces away as it should. But no activity in the Master channel. I think that about covers it so any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

What virtual synth are you using? If you're using the internal computer sound card synth it will not play back inside of Reaper. Either way, you have to have the Reaper track record enabled for it to pass incoming midi through the channel no matter where it's going.

If using Windows you could consider directing Hardware out to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth if you like.

Thanks guys, that got the sound issue sorted. For those interested I found another post on the loading the General Midi sound which expands on the useful answers provided by Gofer and Bradleyfilms. Check: Cheers
