Well I've seen a lot of discussion about preamps but what about mics? Say in the under $1000 range. I've played with a Neumann TLM 103 and wow! what a step up from my 57 I've also heard good things about the AudioTechnica 1050 (?) While the TLM was kickin' is seemed a bit on the bright side (or was that just the 001's converters). So for male vocals and maybe some acustic guitar what would ya all recommend?

What about the RODE CLASIC 2 Valve mic . Very impressive warm and open sounding mic ,that sounds great on just about anything you put it in front of. And can be had for about the same price as a TLM 103. When i A/B these 2 mics the choice was clear.
Davedog, (hey, great name ) I've direct experience with the AT4050 and can attest to is sound. I run it through a Summit tube pre and the sound is quite nice. I record actors (as opposed to vocalists) and find the sound to be quite nice. Plus, its got multiple patterns. I recently posted a question on microphones under the General Information heading. It might be of some use to you since I'll be auditioning some of those mics that I mentioned in that post tonight at a local shop. The mics in question are: The Blueberry and Mouse from Baltic Latvian, the AT4060,AT4033, and the AT4050 from Audio Technica (since I own one and want to make a comparison) Plus the TLM 103 and the Rode NC2 going through an Avalon mic-pre (I'm using that to emulate the Summit that I'm using at the studio) Hope tht might be of some assistance. Cheers, DigiDawg
Sortasonic. Was that an original groovetube? And is there an Alesis model # for its replacement? Anyone try the new Neumann KMS105 (vocal mic) for instruments? Like drums (supercardiod et al)
I would like to know where one can get a Rode Classic II ($1995 retail) for the same price as a TLM 103 ($995 retail). I'll buy two... You sure you don't mean the NT V? ------------------ LW
Shaggy, The way I understand it, it's an Alesis version but only the enclosure is different from the original Groove Tubes. Only bummer is it doesn't come with a shock mount and I can't find one for it since Alesis discontinued the Mic... but at that price it's worth it. The Alesis line appears to be completely redesigned. I haven't seen an equivalent. [This message has been edited by Sortasonic (edited June 20, 2000).]
